Comment by vinbeazel on March 15, 2008 at 1:07am - The Dutch project was focused on making the multiple kites turn a large generator on the ground; we wanted to test the concept of putting the generators on the kites to reach the jet stream with windpower. We found a history of kites being used for communications in 1901, when Marconi used a scout kite, to launch the first wireless radio broadcast across the Atlantic, from Nova Scotia to England. We also found a modern use for using large kites to pull ocean going tankers and container ships. Skysails recently left Hamburg Germany for a port in Venezuela, using a kite to pull a ship.
